Women Trained and Employment by JoWomenomics Work on Combating COVID-19
In the front line of combating COVID-19 are women who work in different sectors to help contain this Pandemic in Jordan. Among those are the women of Northern Shouneh working at a local factory. In 2019, seventy women were trained on JoWomenomics work ethics curriculum and placed in Jobs at the Garment factory in Northern Shouneh who were producing clothes for Chinese market. Several community meetings were set with the local families and decision makers to facilitate the employment process of women in the factory.
Early this year, the factory received orders to develop masks and protective clothing for China. Throughout the month of January 2020, our young women were working hard to produce thousands of protective clothing to the Chinese market. In March of this year, upon the onset of COVID-19 on Jordan, the factory secured partnership with the Ministry of Health to produce 60,000 protective clothing during the month of March.
Our young women employed continued to work at the factory to secure the clothes that would help combat COVID-19. One of our students Rand, stated that she faced objections by her husband to work at the factory in the fear that she may get exposed to the virus and would possibly contaminate her young children.
He was also concerned with managing the household while she is gone. Rand informed us that the factory owner and the leaders of the community spoke to her husband to ensure solidarity of the community during this difficult time. Once again, we see women set-up in the time of crisis to help their community and nation.
