JoWomenomics has been documenting gender inequalities in the workplace and advocating for safe work environments for women in Jordan since 2019 as part of the Women as Partners in Progress (WPP) network when the labor law was raised to parliament for amendment. Owing to our steadfast advocacy work, in March of 2023, JW and the WPP network celebrated the government's modification of Articles 29 and 69 of the Labour Law, repealing restrictions on working hours and access to specific sectors for women. A sub-article in Article 69 was included to enable the Minister of Labour to issue special protections for pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with disabilities, and people performing night work. The amendments to Article 29 also provide a definition of sexual harassment and impose penalties on employers failing to address reported instances of harassment. Advocacy efforts now must ensure the application of these laws in the workplace.
Understanding the impact of the legal reforms on women's economic involvement, JoWomenomics has been conducting focus groups and interviews with community members in three governorates: Irbid, Shouneh, and East Amman. The experiences of stakeholders will inform the communications strategy of an upcoming social media campaign promoting awareness of the updated articles among communities and employers alike, ensuring that the rights of women now enshrined in law are recognized and upheld in the workplace.
